POST NGF ELECTION: Hon Makinde Calls for Prayer to Avert National Doom

"The recent happenings within the Nigeria Governors' forum called for concerns and caution; and if this shenanigan is left unchecked, its capable of sending wrong signal(s) to the public and indeed the sleeping military juntas.

These class of people must be seen to consistently display maturity and fine-tune this "questionable scenario". The onus lies on them to organise a befitting and civilised election to produce a leader within their limited numbers of just 36 in the interest of Nigeria. In retrospect, Prof Attahiru Jega was believed to have conducted credible election in 36 states that produced these eminent Nigerians..

The aftermath of NGF election is certainly a pointer to the beginning of 2015 election, apparently for losers and winners as the case may be. We must note that integrity is obviously central to our conception of a properly functioning political system and of professionals and stakeholders that work within it.

It is instructive to also emphasize here that over the years the House of representatives has remained the last hope of Nigerians where the voice of the voiceless counts and where integrity and sincerity of purpose stand to be virtues that cannot and will never be compromised. I hope these distinguished Nigerians (Chief Security Officers of ours 36 States) will do the needful and revert accordingly so that our democracy can be strengthened and our country can also be better for it. We shall never be part of any misdemeanour which can lead to an irreversible damage to the toga of our democracy. We need to pray fervently in this country to avert an impending doom; unfortunately our leaders are sitting on a keg of gun powder, painfully so. Enough is enough "

Hon Rotimi Makinde,
Dep Chairman (House of Reps) Committee on Human Rights
